Christmas is not Merely About Lights and Decorations: Bishop of Lahore

Muhammad Qurban
Lahore: In this season of joy and celebration, we are reminded that Christmas is not merely about lights and decorations, but a time to reflect on the true essence of the holiday. Amidst the festivities that surround us-Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and sweet traditions-the heart of Christmas lies in Christ, his birth, life, teachings, and mission.
As we rejoice in the birth of Christ, a symbol of hope and salvation, we acknowledge the unique challenges that weigh on our hearts this year. Within our beloved homeland, we grapple with high inflation, an energy crisis, and political instability. Globally, the Palestine-Israel conflict and the Russia-Ukraine War contribute to our collective concerns. The recent tragic incident in Jaranwala serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by Pakistani Christians. It underscores the pressing need for hope, unity, and justice, both in law and culture.

Amidst these difficulties, the resilience of the Christian community shines through. Despite adversity, their determination to celebrate this season becomes a testament to their pursuit of peace. Echoing the words of Archbishop Justin Welby, spoken during Easter, we pray and work for peace Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Palestine, and the forgotten struggles of our world. The divine justice for those who oppress others is a reminder that true peace, born in a broken world, is not a mere daydream but a reality offered through Christ.

The Christmas message of light shining in darkness compels us to strive against oppression and injustice. It does not distract us from the world’s problems but opens our eyes to them, emphasizin social justice issues that persist today. Let us draw strength from this message, seeking peace and justice alongside all of God’s people, including those who may not know Him. In the spirit of Jesus, who embraced vulnerability to sav others, let us celebrate even when faced with challenges. As we rejoice, may we find solace in unity, compassion in diversity, and a commitment to uphol rights of all, especially the marginalized. Together, let us enter 2024 with hope for a bright future Merry Christmas and Pakistan Zindabad!

The Church of Pakistan Lahore Diocesan Council under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Nadeem Kar expresses deep concern over civilian casualties in the Israel-Gaza war and the destruction of hospitals, mosques, and churches. Through this resolution, the Church calls upon the UNO and Western countries, particularly the USA, to use their influence for a ceasefire and the cessation hostilities, allowing humanitarian aid to reach civilians in need.

The resolution also urges the Hamas leadership to release Israeli hostages to facilitate a ceasefi preventing further excuses for Israel to continue hostilities against Palestinians. Furthermore, t UNO is requested to implement the Two-State solution, agreed upon earlier, as a permanent resolution to the Palestinian problem, acknowledged by most countries.
